The ANC is in a bigger mess than it has ever been (and, boy, you should have seen it in exile!) and the country cannot escape forever. Friends of the president tell me he genuinely doesn’t know Lt-Gen Richard Mdluli and doesn’t know how he had those murder, corruption and fraud charges dropped to become the chief of crime intelligence again. Maybe, but I don’t know that Zuma not knowing what is going on is any less scary than him knowing.
I’m not taking any more bets (not being completely mad) but my money is still on the ANC being sensible enough to not re-elect him at the end of the year. If it does, he will destroy it.
Perhaps I am overreacting here but I see Bruce's final paragraph as a public request to the ANC to get rid of their esteemed leader. I think that Bruce hasn't gone far enough in his assessment. Not only will Zuma destroy the ANC but he will destroy South Africa and he'll do it within the next five year term.
Nevertheless – here you have an editor of a very influential national publication calling for the removal of Zuma. I support this.
